Luxury Watch Authentication: What Buyers Need to Know

Why Independent Watch Authentication Matters When Buying a Pre-Owned Luxury Watch

When purchasing a pre-owned Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Omega or another luxury timepiece, there is one question that should come before almost everything else:

Is the watch authentic?

At The Premier Watch Collection, we believe buyers deserve more than a seller simply saying, “Trust us.”

That is why most of the watches in our inventory are independently authenticated by experienced third-party watch professionals prior to being offered for sale. When independent authentication has been completed, we provide the available information and documentation so our customers can purchase with greater confidence.

Counterfeit Watches Have Become Increasingly Sophisticated

There was a time when many counterfeit watches could be identified relatively easily. That is no longer always the case.

Modern replicas can reproduce cases, dials, bracelets, engravings and even movements with an extraordinary level of detail. Some watches can also contain a combination of authentic, replacement, aftermarket or modified components.

That makes professional authentication increasingly important—particularly when purchasing a significant luxury timepiece through the secondary market.

Authentication shouldn't be based on a photograph, a serial number or a seller's reputation alone.

The watch itself needs to tell the story.

What Does a Professional Watch Authentication Examine?

The exact process varies depending upon the watch, manufacturer and authentication provider, but a professional physical examination may evaluate numerous characteristics of the timepiece.

These can include the case and its construction, dial, hands, hour markers, bezel, crown, crystal, bracelet, clasp, engravings, reference numbers, serial numbers and other manufacturer markings.

When appropriate, the movement may also be examined for consistency with the reference being authenticated.

The authenticator is looking at the watch as a complete package and determining whether its characteristics are consistent with what should be present on that particular model and reference.

Authentic Doesn't Always Mean Completely Original

This is an especially important distinction when purchasing vintage watches.

A genuine Rolex that has been worn and serviced for 30 or 40 years may have received legitimate replacement components during its lifetime. A crystal, crown, bezel insert, hands, dial or bracelet may have been replaced during service.

That does not automatically make the watch counterfeit.

However, originality can have a significant effect on collectability and market value.

That is why an informed buyer should consider two separate questions:

Is the watch authentic?

And:

Are its important components original and appropriate for the reference and period?

For collectors, both can matter.

Why We Use Independent Authentication

We sell watches, so we believe an additional independent opinion provides an important layer of confidence for our customers.

For most of our inventory, The Premier Watch Collection utilizes independent watch professionals to authenticate the timepiece before we list it for sale.

One of the independent organizations we work with is Grand Central Watch in New York City, a multigenerational watchmaking business located inside Grand Central Terminal that has served watch owners and collectors since 1952.

Grand Central Watch offers professional authentication and appraisal services that can include physical inspection, documentation of identifying information, specialized counterfeit-detection procedures and written certification.

Depending upon the watch and circumstances, we may also utilize other qualified independent authentication partners.

The important distinction is independence: the person examining the watch is not simply the person trying to sell it to you.

Documentation Matters

Authentication is even more valuable when there is documentation supporting it.

When one of our watches has undergone independent authentication, we identify that fact in the listing and make the available authentication information or documentation available to the purchaser.

That creates another piece of the watch's history and provides the next owner with information they can retain with the timepiece.

For us, that's an important part of transparency.

Box and Papers Are Not Authentication

This is another misconception in the pre-owned watch market.

Original boxes, warranty cards, booklets, hang tags and purchase receipts can certainly add value and desirability to a watch. A complete set is often preferable to a watch sold by itself.

But box and papers alone do not authenticate a watch.

Accessories and documentation should be considered alongside the physical examination of the actual timepiece.

Likewise, a watch without its original box or papers isn't automatically questionable. Many perfectly authentic watches—particularly older examples—have simply become separated from their original accessories over decades of ownership.

The watch itself remains the most important part of the evaluation.

Marketplace Authentication Can Add Another Layer

Some of the marketplaces through which we sell watches also operate their own authentication programs.

Depending upon the platform and transaction, a watch may be sent to a third-party authentication facility before it reaches the buyer.

That means certain watches purchased from The Premier Watch Collection may effectively receive multiple levels of review: our evaluation, an independent authentication performed before listing, and another authentication associated with the marketplace transaction.

For a buyer making a significant purchase, those additional checkpoints can provide valuable peace of mind.

What Should You Ask Before Buying a Pre-Owned Luxury Watch?

Before purchasing, ask whether the watch has been physically inspected, who performed the authentication, whether documentation is available, what accessories are included, and whether any known aftermarket, replacement or service components have been identified.

And always examine the photographs carefully.

A reputable seller should welcome reasonable questions about the watch they're offering.

Our Philosophy: Authenticity, Transparency and Confidence

The secondary luxury-watch market should be built on trust—but trust should be supported by information.

At The Premier Watch Collection, we have built our approach around three principles:

Authenticity. Transparency. Confidence.

Most of our inventory is independently authenticated before being offered for sale, and when that authentication has been performed, we'll provide the available supporting information so you can understand exactly what you're buying.

Whether you're purchasing your first Rolex or adding another significant piece to an established collection, we want the experience to be as exciting as the watch itself.

Buy the watch you love. Know what you're buying. And buy with confidence.

The Premier Watch Collection

Independent authentication availability and procedures vary by timepiece and authentication provider. Authentication represents the findings of the independent provider at the time of its examination and should be considered together with the specific watch listing, condition information and accompanying documentation.
